ASTRON SCOUT
This is our second "scratch build". The Estes Astron Scout was THE FIRST Estes model rocket kit appearing
in 1958 and marketed through a small classified ad in Popular Mechanics.
We gathered the parts from stuff we had left over around the bench, and
dad was kind enough (awesome) to spin us a nosecone on his lathe. Early
model rocket science dictated that the fins were reinforced by gauze and
glue which accounts for that midrift bulge. It took its first flight on
November 14, man does it go! At apogee (the highest altitude in flight)
the Scout kicks its motor back against that motor hook at the tail throwing
off its center of gravity and thus tumbling back to earth.
