Narcolepsy

General Information

Narcolepsy is a serious, lifelong potentially disabling disorder, estimated to afflict one of every 1000 Canadians - most of whom are undiagnosed.

It can strike at any age, although it is most common during teen years. There is no known cure for Narcolepsy and its cause is suspected to be a central nervous sytem defect, as yet unidentified! There is some evidence that a predisposition to Narcolepsy may be inherited.

The disease produces four classic symptoms:

A person can have both Sleep Apnea AND Narcolepsy at the same time! Symptoms of Narcolepsy can be controlled by the use of medication. One of the more common medications is Ritalin.
